Bitcoin Could Soon Pass Ireland in Energy Consumption

New research from Maynooth University indicates that the energy consumption of Bitcoin mining is beginning to outpace Ireland’s entire energy consumption. In 2014, Dr. David Malone and Karl O’Dwyer of Maynooth University discovered that Bitcoin mining could use anywhere from 0.01 gigawatts to 10 gigawatts a day, while Ireland’s energy consumption varied from 2.5 to five gigawatts a day.
