The FIL-Toronto Summit Successfully Concluded — Industry Leaders Gathered to Discuss New Opportunities for Web3 and Distributed Storage Development

From July 4th to 6th, the FIL-Toronto summit sponsored by Filecoin Foundation and Filecoin Orbit, and hosted by FilSwan came to a successful conclusion.

The summit attracted a large number of Filecoin ecosystem builders, engineers, and Web3 enthusiasts to participate. A number of ecosystem project leaders, industry leaders, investment institutions, and technology geeks also exchanged their views on the future development of Web3, distributed storage, and shared technological progress.

The summit covered various theme gatherings, speeches, ecological specials, hackathons, code demonstrations, and cocktail parties, among other events, which attracted the in-depth participation of many guests and Web3 enthusiasts.

Day 1: Web3 Industry Ecology

On July 4, the theme content of the first day of the summit mainly revolved around the Web3 ecosystem development.

To kick off the morning, one of the organizers’ representatives, Charles Cao, FilSwan’s founder, gave a speech on how to use FilSwan to implement Web3 storage, computing, and other applications.

Based on the current status of the Web3 development as well as the storage market, Charles pointed out that there are important development opportunities for resource cross-chain in the future of Web3.

FilSwan, as a one-stop solution provider for underlying Web3 services such as distributed storage and cross-chain payment, has run more than 50 service nodes and could realize different public chain resource calls through cross-chain technology, achieve zero data loss for users through cross-chain contracts, and provide Web3 community DAO governance.

The cross-chain payment function of FilSwan’s core product Multi-Chain Storage (MCS) enables users to complete the storage and payment of files in the Filecoin network on the Polygon chain so that users can generate NFT assets with one click. In the later stage, FilSwan will expand the implementation and application of functions in various fields including cross-chain resources, Data DAO, edge computing, etc., and fully serve the Web3 application layer.

Juan Benet, Founder and CEO of Protocol Labs, also delivered a keynote speech on the ecosystem development of Filecoin and introduced the Filecoin Master Plan.

The Filecoin Master Plan aims to build the world’s largest decentralized storage network, to onboard and safeguard humanity’s data, and to bring compute to the data and enable web-scale apps. Juan showcased Filecoin’s efforts and current developments in advancing this initiative, including RECs, Onramps & Fil Plus, the growing scale of storage providers, various stored datasets, NFTs, applications, and more.

In the end, Juan shared with us the Filecoin core improvements roadmap and sincerely invited everyone to join the construction of the Filecoin ecosystem.

Peter Huo, Executive Director of Binance Labs, introduced Binance Labs to the guests at the summit. He emphasized the importance that Binance Labs places on innovation, and shared his views on decentralized storage, the current demand distribution and restrictive bottlenecks of Web3 storage. Furthermore, Huo emphasized that Web3 storage is still in its infancy, and there are still many ideas and improvement space waiting for builders to realize and expand.

In addition, Huo mentioned at the meeting that the Season 5 Incubation Program of Binance Labs has already opened for application. The program consists of an 8 weeks mentoring session that invites top Binance executives, founders of different Binance portfolio, industry influencers, and crypto investors to share their learning and experience, and provides ongoing open access to value-added services for members within the Binance ecosystem, such as investor and partnership referrals, advice on public relations, marketing, legal, finance, and so forth.

Charles said in his interaction with Peter that FilSwan, as a member of the Season 4 Incubation Program of Binance Labs, has learned a lot in the process of communicating and sharing the experience with mentors and members of the Program, and received lots of help and valuable resources from the program and the community.

Web3 ecosystem representative, Chainlink Labs Product Marketing Manager Micheal Robinson introduced the original intention, working principle, and various use cases of the Chainlink Data Feeds. Chainlink Data Feeds mainly provide decentralized data feeds for hybrid smart contracts, ensuring that Web3 DApps get a secure and reliable source of real-world data.

Team members from Protocol Labs, Filecoin Foundation, FVM, and FilSwan MCS also delivered wonderful speeches and shared various ideas at the summit.

David Aronchick of the Bacalhau project analyzed the current status of the use of big data and a series of problems faced by data teams today and introduced the role of the Bacalhau project in solving these problems as well as the current project progress, among others.

Bacalhau is committed to providing developers with simple, best-in-class, distributed tools to transform the way big data is used and unlock new collaborative ecosystems. In addition, he shared the vision of the Compute over Data working group and warmly invited everyone to participate in its joint construction.

Protocol Labs Software Engineer Alvin Reyes and Estuary PM Corinne Bernett introduced and demonstrated the Estuary project.

Estuary is a solution for storing a large amount of public data on the Filecoin network. The team members showed us how to store data in the Filecoin network through Estuary. Estuary SDK supports multi-language extension development and has detailed docs to help developers to expand use cases.

Ryan Baumann of Protocol Labs analyzed the IPFS technology and the Filecoin project from the various aspects including basic knowledge, technical principles, functions, and application scenarios, and shared 11 interesting application ideas for engineers and project teams developing related projects.

FVM Lead Raúl Kripalani and FVM engineer Karim Agha shared the updates to the FVM Roadmap through a roundtable discussion.

For developers interested in the Filecoin ecosystem, project funding is an important part of promoting ecosystem development. Erin O’Connor, Grant Coordinator at the Filecoin Foundation, introduced in detail the mission of Dev Grants, project funding policy, and how to apply for Grants awards. Her sharing provides a valuable reference for developers in the Filecoin ecosystem.

FilSwan Blockchain Engineer Ricky Yuen gave a speech focusing on Multi-Chain Storage, mainly showing the function, usage, SDK, API and other development tools and interfaces of FilSwan’s multi-chain storage MCS. The secondary development process based on MCS was shown through simple cases.

Day 2: Highlights From the Filecoin Technical Ecological Team

On the second day of the summit, Ed Strong, Seagate Director of Web3 Storage, shared his views on Web3 and discussed DATA DAO and the value of data in Web3 with Gary, Investment Manager of FBG Capita, and Charles Cao, Founder of FilSwan.

According to Strong, the future of data storage will be transformed from centralized to decentralized, and the demand for Web3 data storage market will be enormous.

Additionally, Strong also shared details regarding Seagate’s technical research and achievements in distributed storage and other aspects, as well as the advanced functions in ensuring data security, realizing self-correction, etc., and introduced in detail Seagate’s related hardware and data storage products that adapt to distributed storage.

Filecoin Plus

Filecoin Plus was officially proposed in 2020 and started to be implemented last year. The technical PM of Fil+, Raghav Rmadya, shared the efforts made by Filecoin Plus in promoting the storage of real data in the Filecoin network, as well as the important role played by and economic impact of Datacap resources in ecosystem development. Raghav Rmadya affirmed the positive effect of the 10 times computing power incentives on the use of Filecoin network space for real application scenarios.

Lotus

Lotus is an important implementation program of the Filecoin network and plays an important role in the Filecoin ecosystem. Jennifer Wang, the Technical PM of Lotus, introduced their team and the current status of Lotus, and announcing that the Lotus team is currently recruiting people with lofty ideals to join Lotus to jointly promote the ecological development of Filecoin.

ChainSafe Forest

Lee Raj, the Project Manager of Forest (ChainSafe), introduced Forest — a Rust client of the Filecoin network. Raj pointed out the crucial role of multi-client needs in the Filecoin ecosystem. The Forest client is developed in Rust and will support development needs for the Filecoin Virtual Machine (compatible with EVM). Moreover, he shared with the audience the Filecoin ecosystem products developed by ChainSafe, such as decentralized S3 (ChainSafe Storage), decentralized Dropbox (ChainSafe Files) and Unified Gaming SDK.

Lotus

Lotus technical PM Jennifer Wang and Protocol Labs Lotus engineer Aayush Rajasekaran made an intro to Lotus. Through their introduction of sub-functions and the project progress sharing, participants were able to fully understand the role of Lotus client in promoting the Filecoin ecosystem. At the same time, the current challenges of Lotus were pointed out, as were the topics such as the development direction that will be mainly focused on in the later stage.

Moreover, on the second day of the conference, the organizer explained to the audience the specific rules, precautions, and other information of the Web3 Data Dao Hackathon that started concurrently with the Fil-Toronto Summit.

Day 3: Filecoin Storage Service Provider Showcase

The last day of the summit focused on the development of Filecoin ecological storage service providers and the application of decentralized data in business. Many leaders in the field participated in the topic sharing on the last day.

Swaroop Hegde, Co-founder of Power Loom, briefly introduced DeFi and the important role of Power Loom as a data service provider in the development of DeFi, and demonstrated by examples through Uniswap. Besides, he also shared the PowerLoom Protocol DAO, the current project progress, and long-term strategies, and answered questions from the audience.

Functionland

Ehsan Shariati, Chief Operating Officer of Functionland, introduced Blockchain Attached Storage (BAS), cloud applications, and the mechanism of cloud alternative FULA PROTOCOL, as well as innovative application scenarios such as PLUG-N-PLAY BOX and PHOTOS DAPP from various perspectives. A compatibility layer is created, enabling front-end developers to build Web3 applications in the Web2 paradigm.

Origin Storage

Baiciao Ren, Vice President of Origin Storage North America, shared her insights on Filecoin VMs from a storage vendor perspective, such as the direct impact Filecoin VMs have on storage vendors in data use cases, including big data exchanges and multi-generational storage, and focus on an innovative application concept — big data NFT proposed by Origin Storage, one of the world’s largest storage providers. Traditionally, NFTs can only be used to represent ownership, but through the shrewd application of Filecoin, Origin Storage has successfully made big data transactions a kind of NFT, and this big data NFT will be the most beneficial and disruptive to storage providers. one of the sexual applications. Venus

Joss, Operations Leader of Venus, mainly shared the layout of Venus in the Filecoin ecosystem. Venus is the Go implementation of Filecoin’s distributed storage network and is committed to helping small and medium-sized storage providers join the Filecoin ecosystem network with a lower requirement. It has launched the first distributed mining pool on Filecoin.

In addition, Joss showed the functions of components such as Venus Market, Venus Cluster, and Venus 2.0. Currently, the SP nodes implemented by Venus have reached 100+, and the computing power is 300+ PiB. In the end, Joss introduced the Venus long-term running community, VenusHub, which provides developers and users with on-chain services, development tools, SDK, docs, Github code, and other related resources.

Seal Storage

Andrew McFarlane, Co-founder & CIO of Seal Storage, delivered a speech on the adoption and commercialization of data storage of Seal Storage Web3. He analyzed the major opportunities currently faced by the distributed data storage field, as well as Seal Storage’s efforts made on technology implementation.

At the end of the third day, Kwame Bryan, the core Developer of the ChainSafe Gaming SDK, shared the topic of using Filecoin and IPFS to protect the game so that game characters and assets cannot be controlled and stolen. Before joining ChainSafe, Kwame Bryan was a software developer and educator specializing in mobile game development.

The guests of this summit come from Filecoin infrastructure, middleware, application layer, storage hardware manufacturers, storage service providers, top capital institutions, and important ecological participants of Web3. The topics of the summit were carried out in-depth from industry status, development prospects, project investment, and funding, to technological progress, application scenarios, and hackathons. The summit achieved good results.
