Hackers Pick on Japanese Exchange Zaif, Stealing $59 Mln in Crypto

On Sept. 14, hackers stole a lot of various coins from the Japanese Zaif exchange wallets– Bitcoin, its hard fork coin Bitcoin Cash and MonaCoin. Losses amount to around $59 mln. The hacker attack has not been identified until now.

Most of the funds were stolen from users’ hot wallets, the smaller amount was assets of the exchange. On Sept. 17, the exchange’s technical team spotted an error, only later realizing that this was a hack.

Zaif is a small-scale company, that takes 101st place in daily trading volume.
