The XRP Ledger Foundation (XRPLF) has announced a major addition to its leadership ranks, welcoming Ripple Chief Technology Officer David Schwartz as an Honorary Board Member.
The appointment brings one of the most prominent and deeply knowledgeable figures in the cryptocurrency space directly into the fold of the independent non-profit tasked with fostering the XRPL ecosystem.
"We’re honored to welcome David Schwartz (@JoelKatz) as an Honorary Board Member of the XRP Ledger Foundation," the organization stated. "As one of the original architects of the XRP Ledger, David brings deep technical insight and a long-term perspective that will help strengthen the Foundation’s technical stewardship of the ecosystem."
The original architect
Schwartz is a legendary figure within the XRP ecosystem. In 2011, alongside Arthur Britto and Jed McCaleb, Schwartz was a core developer who built the original code for the XRP Ledger—designing it as a faster, more energy-efficient alternative to the Bitcoin blockchain.
Currently serving as the CTO Emeritus of Ripple, Schwartz has remained the most vocal and technically authoritative advocate for the XRPL.
Strengthening technical stewardship
The XRP Ledger Foundation operates as an independent, non-profit entity separate from Ripple. Its primary mandate is to support the growth, security, and decentralized development of the XRP Ledger. This includes managing core code repositories, maintaining a publisher Unique Node List (UNL) for validators, and supporting global developer initiatives.
By bringing Schwartz on as an Honorary Board Member, the XRPLF is signaling a strong commitment to robust technical governance. His role is "honorary," but his decades of applied cryptography experience and intimate understanding of the ledger's foundational architecture will provide the board with unparalleled strategic guidance.
For the broader XRP community, the appointment is being viewed as a massive win. It will ensure that the XRPL evolves to handle complex new features like decentralized finance (DeFi) automated market makers (AMMs) and smart contracts, and the vision of its original creator remains a guiding force.
