NASA is an unusual figure in the crypto community. However, the agency encourages innovations. So it has granted $330,000 to support a research group that uses Ethereum-based smart contracts.

Dr Jin Wei Kocsis, the head of the research, thinks that Ethereum should be used not for making expensive online pets or fintech apps but for programming spacecrafts.

Dr Kocsis told the journalists that his team plans to use the Ethereum software for making a decentralized infrastructure which will be used in deep space research.

NASA, reportedly, may use Ethereum dApps to eliminate the lag time that prevents instant communication between the earth and the spaceship.

The head of the study, Dr. Kocsis seems to have chosen blockchain because it provides stability, and during a space mission even a slightest mishap may cause a catastrophe, so the new technology could be quite useful here.
