The project may be progressing more quickly than many investors are aware, according to recent data, and Hyperliquid has quietly emerged as one of the best performers of the current market cycle.

Solana isn't backing down yet

Hyperliquid is starting to compete with Solana in areas that are most important to traders, according to a number of important metrics, even though Solana still commands a higher market capitalization and a much deeper ecosystem.

The dominance of derivatives is the first reason. Despite having a market capitalization of slightly less than $17 billion, Hyperliquid produced about $4.7 billion in futures volume over the previous day. In contrast, Solana maintained a market capitalization of more than $39 billion while recording futures volume of about $8.6 billion. Stated differently, Hyperliquid generates over half of Solana's derivatives activity at less than half of its valuation.

Because trading is still one of the main sources of income for cryptocurrency, this efficiency is important. Instead of competing as a general-purpose blockchain first, Hyperliquid is directly vying for one of the most lucrative segments of the market: perpetual futures trading.

Price movement is a reflection of this strength. HYPE is still among the top-performing large-cap assets of 2026 despite a daily decline of almost 7%. The token has increased by more than 600% since launch and by about 157% so far this year. Despite recent profit-taking, HYPE is still trading comfortably above its 50-, 100-, and 200-day moving averages on the daily chart, suggesting that the larger uptrend is still intact.

Hype is gaining more strengh

The structure of the market is another crucial component. Major exchange long-short ratios are still balanced to slightly bullish, and recent liquidations have mostly impacted overleveraged longs rather than triggering a wider cascade. The fact that open interest is still high at about $2.7 billion indicates that traders still consider HYPE to be one of the market's most valuable assets.

Additionally, the project benefits from a narrative that Solana is progressively lacking. Solana has developed into an established ecosystem with many competing sectors. Meanwhile, decentralized derivatives trading is increasingly associated with Hyperliquid. The investment thesis becomes much clearer as a result of that specialization.

All of this does not imply that Hyperliquid will overtake Solana in terms of market capitalization tomorrow. Institutional recognition, developer activity, and liquidity are still significantly higher for Solana. However, the valuation gap may close much more quickly than most market participants currently anticipate if Hyperliquid maintains strong token economics while capturing derivatives volume at its current rate. The figures indicate that the market may already be pricing in that scenario.
