Cardano has scored a significant payments integration after receiving native support in the official x402 codebase.

The implementation, contributed by Cardano Foundation engineers, brings Cardano directly into the open payment protocol's reference tooling.

This means developers building x402-based applications and AI agents can now use Cardano through the same standardized infrastructure available for other supported networks.

The integration includes client, server, and facilitator components as well as working examples, with support covering Cardano mainnet, preprod, and preview.

What it means

x402 is an open payments protocol originally developed by Coinbase. It uses HTTP's long-dormant "402 Payment Required" status code to allow applications to request and make payments directly over the internet.

In simple terms, a service can tell another application or AI agent that access costs a certain amount.

The system is particularly relevant to autonomous AI agents since they can pay for APIs, data, computing resources, or other digital services.

Cardano-based x402 payments were already possible through third-party projects such as Masumi. The new implementation, however, has been incorporated into the official x402 codebase.

This substantially lowers the barrier for developers who want to use Cardano as a settlement network.

It also makes Cardano easier to include alongside other supported networks in multi-chain applications.

Benefits for Cardano

The integration could potentially expand the number of applications capable of accepting payments settled on Cardano.

Developers building x402 applications no longer have to start with an independent Cardano implementation. Native support provides standardized client and server components as well as examples that can be used as a starting point.

Interoperability is another advantage. Given that x402 is designed to be network- and currency-agnostic, applications can support several payment networks while maintaining a common HTTP-based payment flow.

The development comes as x402 continues to gain support from major cryptocurrency and payments companies.

In July, the x402 Foundation launched with support from dozens of organizations, including Amazon Web Services, American Express, Circle, Coinbase, Google, Mastercard, Ripple, Shopify, Solana Foundation, Stellar Development Foundation, Stripe and Visa.
