Crypto perpetual futures began with a relatively straightforward proposition: give traders continuous leveraged exposure to digital assets without requiring an expiring futures contract.
The model became one of crypto's most successful financial innovations.
Now the underlying assets are changing.
As real-world assets increasingly move on-chain, perpetual markets are expanding beyond Bitcoin, Ether and crypto tokens. Equity, commodity and other real-world asset exposures are becoming part of the same always-on trading environment.
According to CCData, real-world asset perpetual trading volume reached a record $460 billion in July 2026, increasing 47.8% month over month.
That growth points toward a much larger development. DeFi is no longer simply building markets for crypto assets. It is beginning to build infrastructure capable of trading exposures to potentially almost anything.
Why Perpetuals Matter
Perpetual futures, commonly called "perps," differ from traditional futures because they have no expiration date.
Instead, mechanisms such as funding rates help keep the price of the perpetual contract aligned with the underlying reference market.
The structure proved particularly well-suited to crypto, where markets operate around the clock and traders want continuous exposure without repeatedly rolling expiring contracts.
Perpetuals subsequently became one of the dominant products on centralized crypto exchanges. More recently, decentralized perpetual exchanges have brought the model on-chain.
The arrival of real-world assets creates a considerably larger potential market.
If stocks, commodities, indexes and other financial assets can be represented or referenced through blockchain infrastructure, perpetual markets are no longer limited to native crypto assets.
In theory, the same wallet used to trade an ETH perpetual could eventually access markets offering exposure to a much wider universe of assets.
The result could be a new kind of global derivatives market built around blockchain rails.
Tokenization Is Only Half the Story
Much of the discussion around real-world assets has focused on tokenization itself.
That makes sense. Bringing ownership or economic exposure on-chain is a prerequisite for creating blockchain-based markets around traditional assets.
But issuing an asset is different from creating a liquid market for it.
For tokenized markets to mature, they require infrastructure for pricing, liquidity, execution and risk management. Derivatives add another layer of complexity.
A decentralized perpetual exchange needs to execute trades efficiently, manage leverage and liquidations, obtain reliable pricing information and provide enough liquidity for traders to enter and exit positions.
Those requirements become particularly important when the reference asset exists partly or entirely outside the blockchain.
A U.S. stock, for example, trades during defined market hours on traditional venues. A decentralized market can operate continuously.
Connecting those two worlds raises difficult questions about pricing and execution outside the underlying asset's primary trading session.
Infrastructure, rather than token issuance alone, may therefore determine whether real-world asset markets become genuinely useful on-chain.
Building the Perpetual Trading Stack
This has prompted infrastructure providers to rethink how decentralized perpetual exchanges are built.
Orbs' Perpetual Hub is one example of this emerging architecture. Rather than requiring each DEX to independently build all the infrastructure necessary for a perpetual market, the protocol provides decentralized backend components designed to support on-chain perpetual futures trading.
The broader idea is significant.
DeFi's early architecture often required individual protocols to construct large portions of their own financial infrastructure. As the market matures, specialized infrastructure layers can increasingly handle functions that applications previously needed to build themselves.
This resembles the evolution of other technology markets. Developers generally do not build their own cloud infrastructure, payment rails or database engines every time they launch an application.
Decentralized finance may be moving toward a similar modular model.
A DEX can concentrate on its users, liquidity and market while specialized protocols provide execution infrastructure underneath it.
From Crypto Markets to Global Markets
RWA perpetuals also blur the increasingly artificial boundary between "crypto trading" and conventional financial markets.
Imagine an on-chain trader with access from the same interface to Bitcoin, Ether, gold, major equity indexes and individual stocks.
The assets may originate in very different markets, but from the user's perspective they become positions managed through the same blockchain account.
This could have important consequences for DeFi.
Today, crypto markets remain largely separated from the enormous pools of capital and assets found in traditional finance. Tokenization is beginning to create bridges between them.
Derivatives could accelerate that convergence because traders do not always need direct ownership of an underlying asset. They may simply want price exposure.
That potentially expands the addressable market for decentralized exchanges far beyond crypto-native tokens.
It also raises the standard these exchanges will be expected to meet.
A trader accustomed to professional derivatives markets expects reliable execution, sophisticated risk controls and sufficient liquidity. Moving those markets on-chain does not eliminate those requirements.
It makes solving them more important.
The 24/7 Market Question
There is also something fundamentally new about combining real-world assets with crypto market structure.
Traditional markets close.
Blockchain markets do not.
Tokenized assets and RWA derivatives therefore create the possibility of global markets that remain accessible outside the hours imposed by traditional exchanges.
But 24/7 availability introduces new challenges.
Liquidity may become thinner when the underlying market is closed. Price discovery may shift toward alternative venues. Oracle design becomes more important. Traders and protocols need mechanisms capable of managing sudden volatility when the primary market reopens.
These are infrastructure problems, and solving them will require more than simply putting an existing financial product on a blockchain.
The protocols that handle execution, pricing, liquidity and risk could ultimately become as important as the tokenization platforms issuing the assets themselves.
DeFi Starts Trading Everything
Real-world assets have frequently been described as a way to bring traditional finance on-chain.
Perpetual markets suggest something more ambitious.
Instead of simply reproducing existing financial assets as blockchain tokens, DeFi could create an always-on trading layer connecting crypto-native and traditional market exposures within the same infrastructure.
That transition will not happen solely because more assets are tokenized.
It will depend on whether decentralized markets can provide the execution quality, liquidity and risk infrastructure required to support them at scale.
The rapid growth of RWA perpetual trading suggests that this experiment has already begun.
Crypto built a global market that never closes. The next question is how much of the world's financial system markets can ultimately trade.
