The alleged thief behind Iceland's Bitcoin heist has escaped from prison, according to reports from Guardian media.
Sindri Thor Stefansson accused of stealing 600 cryptocurrency mining computers in four separate incidents from Dec 2017, and Jan 2018 allegedly flew to Sweden on a flight which was also carrying Iceland’s prime minister.
The estimated $2 mln heist was the largest in Iceland's history.
Stefansson escaped through a window of the low-security Sogn prison located in Southern Iceland nearly 60 miles from its international airport in Keflavik on Tuesday.
Police said he traveled under passport in someone else’s name. Stefansson was identified via surveillance video.
Gunnar Schram, the local police chief told reporters that the alleged criminal "had an accomplice."
Stefansson’s whereabouts are unknown at this time, but a warrant is out for his arrest in Sweden.
Katrín Jakobsdóttir, Iceland’s prime minister, was headed to Stockholm for a meeting with India’s prime minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday.
