One City in New York Considering Making Bitcoin Mining Illegal

Commercial cryptocurrency mining could soon be illegal in the city of Plattsburgh, New York. The mayor of Plattsburgh has bemoaned mining, saying it “has increased our power usage and ...is affecting our ratepayers.” One Bitcoin miner spoke with the local newspaper, suggesting that concerns should be addressed, but a full ban eschewed. If passed, this would not be the first moratorium on crypto mining in the US. In 2016, Chelan County in Washington State also banned crypto mining and raised their electricity prices.
